Policies

Editorial Standards

Draft standards for review before launch.

Accuracy

We verify facts before publication, attribute information to its source and state the date and status of every figure we publish.

Review

Every story is reviewed by an editor other than its author before publication. Editorials are approved by the Editor-in-Chief.

Labelling

Reporting, analysis, explainers, opinion, editorials and sponsored content are labelled on every page and every card.

Independence

Advertisers, sponsors and subscribers have no influence over editorial decisions. Commercial and editorial roles are separated in our publishing system as well as in our newsroom.

Sources and quotations

We do not fabricate quotations or composite sources. Anonymous sourcing requires editor approval and a stated reason.

Images

We record the source and licence of every image. Illustrations and diagrams are labelled; we do not present generated imagery as documentary photography.

Data

Charts state their question, units, source and observation date. Illustrative or modelled data is labelled as such. Market data shows its provider and delay.

Artificial intelligence

Any use of automated tools in reporting or production is disclosed, and every published piece is reviewed and approved by an editor.
